I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves,
so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” – Matthew 10:16
These are unprecedented times in our country’s history. As disciples of Christ, many of us feel the urgency to take bold action and love our neighbors, especially those who are the most vulnerable.
While that call is compelling, the Alaska Conference encourages you to move carefully, prayerfully and wisely, guided by our Wesleyan principles: Do good. Do no harm. Stay in love with God.
As you discern your response, both personally and communally, please ask yourself:
- If you are vulnerable, have you developed a plan?
- If you are an ally, are you truly listening to those most affected?
- Are the resources you are consuming and sharing trustworthy and up-to-date?
- Could your actions unintentionally cause harm?
- Have you sought legal guidance to understand the consequences of challenging enforcement actions that may be legal, even if they are immoral?
- Are you supporting the ongoing work of community partners?
Even as you discern your response, don’t miss opportunities to:
- Pray together.
- Hold vigils in places of injustice.
- Listen to those with experience in peaceful civil disobedience.
- Share stories—with care and permission—of those living in fear.
In partnership with our sibling conferences in the Greater Northwest Area we have created a website landing page to assist us. It gathers resources from across the denomination and offers guidance for us during these difficult days.
May God bless and strengthen us in this tender time.
