GNW Opening Session Offering
Africa University

John Wesley made education a core commitment of his Methodist movement going back to its earliest days.

In 1748, just a decade after his heart-warming spiritual awakening, Wesley established the still-thriving Kingswood School to provide high-quality education to the children of coal miners, as well as adults.

So it makes sense that as the people called Methodist “spread scriptural holiness over the land,” they planted not only churches but also schools for all ages. Those campuses eventually came to include United Methodist seminaries and theological schools to educate clergy around the globe.

But ensuring would-be pastors can pay for their education has long been a challenge — especially in Africa, the Philippines and parts of Europe. While 71% of United Methodist clergy in the U.S. have a master’s degree or higher in theology, less than 5% of clergy in Africa, Europe and the Philippines can say the same.

That’s where Miracle Sunday comes in. The one-time offering is scheduled to take place in the denomination’s more than 30,000 congregations on May 17 (we will take it on May 20 as part of the GNW Opening Session), the final Sunday of this year’s Easter season. The offering will raise funds for the Endowment for Theological Education in Africa, Europe and the Philippines.

Alaska Women Clergy
As we gather for Annual Conference, we also celebrate a historic milestone — 70 years of women in ordained ministry in The United Methodist Church. This anniversary invites us to honor the courage, faithfulness, and leadership of the women who have answered God’s call across generations, often serving with resilience in the face of challenge and sacrifice.

This year’s special offering will support Alaska women pastoral leaders through grants administered by the Professional Ministries Unit. Funds will be available to support multiple dimensions of wellness, including physical, spiritual, financial, and mental well-being. These resources may assist clergywomen in accessing opportunities for renewal, continuing education, counseling, retreat, health support, or other practices that sustain long-term ministry and flourishing.

By contributing to this offering, we celebrate the legacy of women in ministry while investing in the health and vitality of current and future leaders across the Alaska Conference. This is an opportunity to give thanks for the gifts women bring to the Church and to participate in building a culture where clergy wellness, support, and wholeness are valued and nurtured.
